Meet Scrawny
Scrawny is a red-tailed hawk who arrived at Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation in Season 1 of STAYING WILD in a very emaciated state. It was very important for him to gain weight. If any animal or bird gets down to 50% of their ideal body weight, their chances for survival plummet.
Scrawny had to be hand fed and reminded how to hunt once more. He eagerly would gobble down pieces of raw chicken, but hated being syringed fluids. Slowly he worked up to whole mice.
Will he learn to hunt in time to be released before he has to join the migration south for the winter? Watch Season 1 of STAYING WILD to find out!
Red-tailed hawks are built to hunt. Their large wing span, keen eyesight (8 times better than human eyes) and large talons make them effective hunters as they circle from great heights. They are an important part of the ecosystem that keeps rodents and other pests in check.
